CHARLES COOPER
Geographics
There are few artists who apply as much dedication to a single subject as Charles Cooper. Since the late eighties he has painted roundabouts, intersections, pedestrian crossings and  street markings - each time managing to unearth something remarkable about the humble road. In Geographics, his attention has turned almost exclusively to the meandering tar lines which fill the cracked bitumen of Sydney streets, where the artist lives and works.  He focuses on the continual cycle of fracture and repair experienced quite literally by the urban landscape. These remedial tar lines indicate a tension between our efforts to impose order and nature’s responsive resistance.
