This exhibition of Australian art features several abstract painters, including two making their Annandale debut ? John Bartlett and Tim Bass along with Lesley Dumbrell who has exhibited on numerous occasions at Annandale. With the paintings of Charles Cooper and the sculpture of Michael Buzacott the line between figuration and abstraction blurs somewhat. Cooper?s depictions of speed bumps and other urban ?signs? in our cities are based upon tangible objects but the effect on the viewer is at first more abstract. BUZACOTT is a well known sculptor whose primary medium is steel. Influenced by the great British sculptor Anthony Caro and the paintings of Jules Olitski, the work has figurative ? even narrative elements, but the conscious use of materials as central to the message, leave one with an abstract first impression. DUMBRELL is known to many through private and institutional collections (her work was already purchased by the National Gallery of Australia in the seventies)
