"No artist of our time has striven so consistently to make the art of the past a living part of the present"
- John McDonald, critic for the Sydney Morning Herald writing in the catalogue essay of the exhibition

LEON KOSSOFF (lives and works in London) is one of the most esteemed artists working in the world today. Along with Lucien Freud and Frank Auerbach he is the most important artist of the so-called "School of London" that had it's genesis in the 1950's - 1960's and whose influence is a firm part of worldwide art history. His last exhibition in Australia "The Poussin Project" was shown at the National Gallery of Australia in 2001 in tandem with an exhibition of paintings and drawings at Annandale Galleries. Both shows were met with rapturous public and critical acclaim.

While also known for his extraordinary portraits and city landscapes, Kossoff has always drawn in front of the motif of old master paintings before public opening hours in the National Gallery in London and this work culminated in an exhibition also titled; "Drawing From Painting" at the National Gallery in 2007.

The exhibition at Annandale has a set of nineteen unique etchings, of which similar works (unique etchings are different states and typically number only two or three different versions) were shown in the 2007 show and acquired by the National Gallery in London. In addition there are eleven charcoal drawings that had never before even left the artists studio and are being seen for the first time anywhere here in Australia.

It may be said with some certainty that Kossoff has had an enormous influence and impact on Australian art and artists. This unique opportunity to see works that are part of his famous ?dialogue? with the old masters both represent a fulcrum of the last ten years of his work and also allow us to better understand how art is a continuum of influences and interpretations of the past in order to be fully present and culturally significant.

For those who wish to better understand our relationship in art and culture to the past, therefore better understanding our present, this exhibition allows us to see and feel aspects of art and indeed ourselves in new and unexpected ways.

Do not miss this opportunity to view over thirty works never before seen anywhere in the world as well as etchings from the Poussin project and other subjects by Leon Kossoff.
